Chapter one · Kisah kami

Before there was a brand,
there was a farm.

In a longhouse in Sri Aman, Sarawak, our Apai Andrew planted pepper vines — one by one, by hand, over many years.

He tended them through seasons of sun and rain. He knew each vine the way you know an old friend. His dedication to family, community, and the land shaped everything around him.

To us, he was simply Apai. And this was simply the farm.

Chapter two · Pelajaran

The lesson

The first time I visited his farm, I thought growing pepper was simple.

Plant the vines. Wait. Harvest.

I was wrong.

As we walked through the farm, Apai stopped at a vine. At the bottom of each pepper spike were small berries.

Instead of keeping them, he carefully plucked them away.

Curious, I asked why. His answer was simple: if the small ones stay, the plant has to feed all of them.

Remove them — and the nutrients go to the berries above. Then he moved to the next vine. And the next. One by one, by hand.

“Fewer berries.
Better berries.”

— a lesson from Apai Andrew

Great pepper isn't just fertile soil or good weather. It's patience — and knowing when to let go of something good, so something better can grow.

Chapter three · Tangan yang meneruskan

The hands that carry it forward

When we lost Apai, the vines did not stop growing. Someone had to keep tending them.

That someone is his sister, Aunty Sini. For years she has continued the harvest in Sri Aman — same farm, same hands-on care, same quiet patience he taught us all.

Lada Apai is more than black pepper. It is a story of family, perseverance, and the land that continues to provide for us.

Chapter four · Dari ladang

From vine to spice

Most people have used black pepper their whole lives — but few have seen it fresh.

The bottle

Apai means father in Iban.
Every bottle carries his name — and his lesson.

Kenapa lain rasanya?

Most black pepper is ground long before it reaches you — blended from many farms, sitting in warehouses, fading quietly in a shaker. Ours never travels far from the vine. One farm. Whole berries. Sun-dried the slow way and bottled in small batches soon after harvest, so what reaches your kitchen still smells like Sarawak.

You don't know who grew your supermarket pepper. Ours has his name on the bottle.
